Light For Guidance

There are many references in the Bible that describe Jesus as the light, and there are a number of ways to think about this. One way came to my mind recently.

My neighborhood has been without electricity the last few days as a result of high winds damaging power lines. Fortunately we have a generator that can power essential parts of our home. In order to set the generator up, I have to change some switches on the circuit breaker panel in my basement. Without the light of a flashlight in the basement, it would be very easy for me to make a mistake with these settings, causing electrical damage to appliances, the generator, or possibly injuring myself or someone else.

In a similar way, without the light of the world, that is Jesus, we do not see things in our world properly, and can make decisions that can cause damage to ourselves and others.

Jesus says in John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” And in John 12:35 He says, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.”

Dear Lord, you are the light of life showing us the way to what is right for our lives, now and eternally. Help us follow you and your teaching as the illumination for the decisions in our lives. In Your name we pray. Amen.

  1. I’m so thankful for Jesus as my guiding light and I’m also so thankful we got our power back on !

  2. The light of Jesus can work in the way of “discernment” if you tune in to Him. I just learned that today! I thank Jesus for teaching me so much about how to listen to His whispers.
