“Good”

I listen to a podcast recorded weekly by a retired US Navy Seal. In addition to being very tough and disciplined, he is also very well read and focused on self improvement. In a recent episode, he answered the following listener question. “How do you deal with setbacks, failures, delays, defeat, or other disasters?” His answer, in his characteristic brevity, was “Good.” The reason these things are “good” is that there is always something good that can be captured from bad situations or events, and that is the part on which we should focus.

This is what the Bible tells us, too.

Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

James 1:2-3 says, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.”

As difficult as it may seem sometimes, we should accept our difficult situations and say “Good” then ask God to help us grow through them.

Dear Lord, help us remember that you know what we are experiencing, and are always with us to help us through. With you, our most difficult situations and experiences can become our best education, inspiration and opportunities. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Proof

There is a concept in Mathematics called a Proof. A Proof is a step by step demonstration that a formula is actually true. A teacher or professor would ask a student something like, “Prove that the area of a rectangle is its length multiplied by its height,” and the student would explain the steps that show this formula is true.

In Matthew 3:8 John the Baptist tells the Pharasees, “Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.”

If he asked us, could we “prove,” by our behavior, that we have repented, turned from our sinfulness and worked at doing God’s will?

Dear Lord, You know our every thought and action, and know whether we are truly repentant. Give us the strength and will to turn from, and resist, our sinful desires and actions, so that our lives “prove” our repentance. in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Honor God With Our Bodies

What if one day God spoke to us and said, “I am going to let you have any car you want; Ferrari, Porsche, Rolls Royce, Cadillac, Corvette, Tesla, F350 Crew Cab Dually or any other. He says, additionally, He is going to see how we are taking care of it, every day.

If that happened, we would probably keep that car in immaculate shape, washed, waxed, serviced regularly, and driven proudly around the neighborhood.

In reality, God has not given us a car, but he has given us our bodies.

Paul talks about this in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, writing, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”

There is so much good information available today on how to take car of our physical bodies, all we need to do is look. Having the will to treat our bodies with respect, morally as well as being fit and healthy, is not always easy. However, that is what God is telling us to do. If we ask, he will help us.

Dear Lord, our bodies are yours, entrusted to us. Help us have the will to honor You by treating our bodies morally, and staying healthy and fit. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

All Things Working Together

We never know, at the time, the good that will come from the struggles and tragedies in our lives, but as Christians we do know that God uses “all things” for our good.

The apostle Paul writes in Romans 8:28 “and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” And says in verse 31 ” So if God is for us, who can be against us?” NIV

We can proceed in our lives with this power, knowing that if we love God…keeping His will as our priority, we have His almighty power coordinating “all things” for our good.

Dear Lord, we thank you that we know you are there for us; that our struggles and tragedies are not a surprise to you and you are using them for our good. Help us trust your will and be at peace in this knowledge. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Bully Proofing

The other day, I saw a short video of some “bully-proofing” techniques a martial arts organization was teaching young children. The technique began with looking the bully in the eye, and telling him or her that they are not going to let themselves be bullied. Their training went on to include other defensive techniques, but it started with displaying resistance and confidence.

This is somewhat like how the Bible tells us to act in the face of the devil’s temptation.

Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 16:13, “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.”

James 4:7 tells us, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ”

With God, we can overcome anything the devil may throw at us.

Dear Lord, you have power over all things, including the devil. Help us have the confidence in your power and support to stand firm and resist the devil, so he will depart from us as promised. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
