You may be familiar with the illustration Jesus gives his disciples in Luke 11; Where he tells this story; you have visitors late one night, and you don’t have any food to provide them, so you go to your neighbor’s house to ask to borrow some food. The neighbor tells you to go away because he and his family are already in bed. You keep on knocking until finally your neighbor gives in and gives you some food, not because he is your friend, but because you are so persistent; the NIV versions says “..because of your shameless audacity, he will get up and give you what you need”

What I had not realized until recently, is that this illustration is immediately before this familiar passage in Luke 11:9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” NIV

The Living Bible writes it this way. “…And so it is with prayer—keep on asking and you will keep on getting; keep on looking and you will keep on finding..”

It is pretty clear that Jesus was saying, “pray with persistence,” even “audacity” which the dictionary defines as, “bold or arrogant disregard of normal restraints.” This is probably a little uncomfortable for some, including me; being pushy and persistent with God, but that is what He told his disciples.

Dear Lord, help us remember to come to you boldly asking you for the things we need, and want to help us live our lives to glorify you. Help us also pray boldly for you to help our churches, and those in need of your healing, peace, protection, and joy. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NLT

How often we get frustrated and beaten down by the challenges of life; whether we are trying to get ahead by working and going to school, a stay at home parent trying to keep children on track, house organized, spouse happy, and personal sanity, a single parent trying to provide for and raise children at the same time, one challenged by trama, addictions, or personal tragedies, an executive or professional with a hectic schedule competing with family priorities.

I think what Jesus was telling the crowd, and is trying to tell us, is to look to Him and place our confidence and faith in Him; He will help us have peace amidst life’s challenges.

Dear Lord, help us remember that You love us, like a caring parent with outstretched arms waiting for us to come and find comfort and security. In Your name we pray. Amen.

You probably know some people who always have a critique or fault to find with everyone, and everything. How we react to people like this is one of the challenges of life.

There isn’t much we can do to change people’s criticism, so we should just work on handling it well.

Proverbs 17:10 says, “A rebuke impresses a discerning person more than a hundred lashes a fool.”

As difficult as it may be to listen to criticism (rebuke) we can work on trying to learn and improve from the critic’s input. I am always incredibly impressed by people who can take criticism, whether it is fair or not, and are not defensive, but acknowledge the critique, and use it to make themselves better.

We know that God routinely disciplines and refines us, and sometimes this may come through critiques from other people. It would be great if we could work on overcoming our defensiveness, and find the lesson in the critique.

Dear Lord, it is always difficult to be criticized or rebuked, but this may be one way you are working on us to make us better. Help us have the confidence in your support, to avoid our defensive reaction and be the discerning person who learns from our critics. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

I think illustrations are very helpful in clarifying and understanding Biblical concepts. I have worked to develop a good illustration to describe Paul’s words in the verse that is a foundation of Christianity in Ephesians 2:8,9 ” For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so no one can boast.”

We talk about grace, and faith, but how do they fit together?

Think of water flowing through a garden hose. The water is God’s grace, and the hose is our faith. So grace (water) comes through faith (the hose). Before we are saved, we have put a kink in the hose, and are holding it to prevent the water from flowing. When we release the kink, the water flows. God’s grace is a free gift ready for anyone who will release the kink in their hose, and stop rejecting the grace. Faith is the way it comes to us.

Dear Lord, Thank you for the free gift of eternal life that we have by your gift of grace. Help us accept it completely, and share the peace it brings with others so they might remove the “kink in their hose” and accept your grace as well. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Many people grew up in Christian families, and carried on with their Christian lives from childhood into their adult lives. There are also many Christians who practiced different religions, were avowed atheists, or just didn’t think about God in their lives until God called them to his mission. Many of these conversions are amazing stories.

The most amazing conversion in the Bible is the apostle Paul, who turned from being the biggest persecutor of Christians, to the leading Evangelist in history and the author of much of the New Testament.

These conversions are not coincidences to God. Paul writes in Galatians 1:15-16, “But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles.”

Dear Lord, Thank you for being active in our world, calling and empowering people to bring your love and Salvation to others. Help us find your calling in our lives so that we may do our part. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
