Occasionally you run across a passage in the bible that just delivers a crystal clear message.

Proverbs 11:24 is one of these. In the NLT version it says, “Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.”

I think it is significant that the passage doesn’t get into the details of what percentage to give, pre-tax or after tax, or to evaluate how much of the recipient’s contributions are used for administrative costs, etc. It describes a mindset of generosity. With this mindset, God will provide more than you started with.

Proverbs 11:25 goes on, “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.”

I was reminded recently (Thanks Matt!) of an expression that sums this up. “You can’t out-give God”

Like the parable of the three servants in Matthew 25, If we do well with what God gives us, he will give us more.

Dear Lord, It is so difficult for us to counter our fear of not having enough. This fear can lead us to be stingy with the gifts you have given us. Help us overcome this fear, be generous, and put our trust in you to provide what we need and more. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have you ever noticed, when you are shopping for a new car and you have nearly settled on a particular model, you seem to see many of them on the road? Or when you are thinking about moving, you seem to see every real estate sign?

Our minds are always working behind the scenes, seeing more than we consciously notice. It is no surprise, then, that if we spend our time dwelling on our earthly wants and desires, we see those things that our earthly self is attracted to, which are not always good. However, Galatians 5:22 says the fruit of the Spirit are, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If we spend our time focusing on these things, we will recognize and get more of them.

Romans 8:5-6 Paul writes, “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Dear Lord, the mind you gave us is such a powerful machine, but like any powerful machine, if not properly controlled it can go wrong. Help us keep our minds focused on those good things you have provided, so that we build on the gifts of the Spirit and find peace. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Do you remember ever having done something you knew was wrong, against your parent’s rules, and were caught. Then feeling so terrible and repentant, you came, possibly crying, to your parents expecting severe punishment. However, your parents seeing how sorry you were for your mistake, and how seriously you were punishing yourself emotionally, they let you go, un-punished.

If you are like me, you may have experienced this situation from both the child and parent’s perspective.

This situation is modeled for us by God.

In Joel 2:12-13, God tells Joel, the prophet, to tell the people, “That is why the Lord says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me all your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, mourning. Let your remorse tear at your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful. He is not easily angered; he is full of kindness and anxious not to punish you.”

God loves us and wishes for us to correct our ways on our own, without the need for His punishment and discipline.

This is ultimately demonstrated by Jesus Christ coming to take the punishment for us. John 3:16-17 says, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”

Dear Lord, we can get a very small understanding of the love you have for us by witnessing the love we see between parents and children. Help us remember that you love us, and come to you in humble repentance, thankful for your grace and mercy. And Lord, if this is not type of love we received from our parents, let us be the new creation and show this type of gracious love to our children. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

You have probably heard people say something like, “God will never give you more than you can take.”

I think this understanding comes from the following passage in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”

What do we mean by saying something is “more than we can take?” I think it means we are facing a situation experiencing fear, anger, grief, or loss, that is so intense or devastating that we might do something we know is wrong. This is a temptation.

It could be the that someone hurt us or someone we love, and we are tempted to take vengeance, or we lost someone we loved, and we think we cannot continue living without them, or a relationship fell apart and we think we cannot go on. These are all temptations to do something we know is wrong.

As the verse says, we will not be tempted beyond our ability to withstand, and we will be given a way out.

As terrible and tragic as some things may be in our lives, we can always rely on God. If we trust him, he will comfort us through the pain, and lead us past the temptations.

Dear Lord, Some things in life appear to be too much for us to handle, but help us remember that you know our experiences, and our pain. Help us remember, also, to come to you for comfort and a way past our tragedies and temptations. In Jesus’ name we pray.

I think we all have seen the adventure films where the hero is racing through some foreign city trying to reach the US Embassy before being captured, or the pictures of people surrounding a free country’s embassy trying to find refuge as revolutionaries are taking over the country.

Envision that scenario as you read Psalm 91:9-10 which says, “If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home.”

God is our refuge, where we can find safety and security. The classic words of Psalm 23 should always be in our minds when we are afraid, (I remember the King James version) Psalm 23:4, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Dear Lord, We thank you that though we may go through frightening and difficult times in our lives, you are our refuge. Help us remember to come to you for refuge and comfort. We know you will not disappoint us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
