Faith, Family, Friends

This week my family has the privilege of vacationing with each other, my siblings, nieces, nephews, parents and a number of friends in a beautiful location associated with a Christian retreat.

I cannot help thinking of the words of Acts 2:42-43 while here, “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals including the Lord’s Supper, and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.”

I pray that all of you could experience the love of a close knit Christian family, the inspiration and encouragement of daily bible study, and the joy and amazement of fellowship with other believers in a place of natural beauty God created. It is miraculous!

Dear Lord, thank you for giving us opportunities to refresh and rejuvenate ourselves with the fellowship of believers, study of your word, and inspiration of your creation. Though it may be different for each of us, help us all find ways to take time to immerse ourselves in these wonderful gifts and experience the deep sense of awe in You. In Jesus name. Amen.

First Fruits

Proverbs 3:9 Says, “Honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first fruits of all your crops. then your barns will be filled completely and your vats will overflow with new wine.”

Some translations say, “honor him with the best part of what you produce.”

I think this is actually describing a mindset of how we should look at our finances. A mindset that the most important use of our finances in honoring God, doing with our money what we think would please God. This will be different for each of us, but the concept is the same, that we think about what God would have us do with our money before we use it. When we do, God promises that we will always have more than enough.

Dear Lord, money is often a difficult subject for us as Christians. We often find that there doesn’t seem to be enough to cover all of our expenses, so we cut back on using our money to honor you. Help us truly believe that all we have comes from you, therefore you will always provide us what we need if we trust you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Live In God’s Protection

The Bible is very clear that if we believe and trust in God, he will protect and guide us.

Among the passages about this is, 2 Thessalonians 3:3 “But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.”

It is also clear that if we turn our backs on God and his direction, he will leave us to the consequences of our actions.

Psalm 81:11-12 says, “But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.”

And Romans 1:24 says, “So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired….” And verse 27, “…they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.”

Dear Lord, you outlined a plan for us, and if we follow it, you have promised to protect and guide us. Help us acknowledge You and Your direction, and live in the peace and joy that you provide. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Wise, Gracious, and Sensible

Paul writes in Colossians 4:5,6, “Make the most of your chances to tell others the Good News. Be wise in all your contacts with them. Let your conversation be gracious as well as sensible, for then you will have the right answer for everyone.” TLB

At first we might think that this may only be applicable to non-believers, but I think it is also applicable for speaking with others who have accepted Jesus. We all don’t have all the answers, and many of our Christian brothers and sisters may need something that we have learned in the course of our Christian walk. So let us be wise, gracious and sensible in discussing the good news with everyone.

Dear Lord, help us make the most of the opportunities you place in our paths to share the Good News of your love and salvation with others. Help us also remember to choose our words wisely, and be gracious and sensible to all; those who are missing your salvation, and those who are already in their walk with you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

The Feet That Bring Good News

How blessed those of us are whose parents brought us up to know Jesus Christ. Think of how it might have been if our parents did not lead us to our Savior. Who would have? How would we hear the story? Would we accept it? For those who came to Christ outside of their family, do you remember who invited you, and why you opened yourself up to Jesus?”

Paul describes these questions in Romans 10:14-15, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Most of us may be reluctant to witness, but to overcome that reluctance, think about how wonderful it would be to be the person who helped someone else become saved.

Dear Lord, thank you for those that helped us come to know and believe in you. Help us to have the courage to help someone else come to be saved. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
