Each Of Us A Note In The Music

Yesterday during our church service, one of our bell choirs played a piece. As I was watching and listening, I thought about how similar the bell choir was to how Paul describes the church.

In a bell choir, there are 10 or 12 people who ring two to four bells each. Each bell is a different note. When the ringers play precisely, in time, it creates beautiful chords and a melody that flows from one ringer to the next. If all we heard was one ringer, the music would be almost meaningless, with a couple notes played, then silence waiting for those notes to occur again in the piece.

Paul writes in Romans 12:4-6, “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”

God has given each of us different interests and talents. When we all use them together for his work, the church comes together like a beautiful musical performance with each of us playing our part in perfect synchrony, bringing glory to God, and serving our neighbors.

Dear Lord, you have created the opportunity for us to do great things as a church, when we work together using the unique gifts you have given each of us. Help us remember to use what you have given us, and when combined with what you have given our fellow members, Your church will do great things. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

The Nation Whose God Is The Lord

We are all well aware of the important election coming up in a couple days in the U.S. As Christians, we should be putting our Christian principles at the top of the list when choosing a candidate.

Most people reading this message live in democratic countries; countries “ruled by the people.” In Bible times, everyone lived in dictatorships. Individuals did not have the ability to decide on their rulers. In our modern democracies, we are essentially the “rulers.” When we vote, we are in the position of the rulers in the Bible times. What did God tell them to do?

When Moses was leading the people from Egypt, He was given the advice in Exodus 18:21 “But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.”

This is the advice we should take as “rulers” of our country. We should select candidates who fear God, and are trustworthy.

Psalm 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” If we rule as Christians, our nation will be blessed.

Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of the United States of America. Give us the wisdom and courage to put our faith first when we vote, and be wise rulers. who fear you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Waiting Peacefully

Have you heard this prayer? “Dear Lord, please give me patience, and give it to me right now.”

Psalm 37:4 Says, “Be delighted with the Lord. Then he will give you all your heart’s desires.” however, the Psalm goes on in verse 7 to say “Rest in the Lord; wait patiently for him to act. Don’t be envious of evil men who prosper.” TLB

It is important to trust God’s timing and “rest” or stay in peace patiently while we wait for Him.

Dear Lord, Help us wait patiently for the things for which we desire and pray. Help us trust your timing knowing that you care for us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Surrender

Surrender: Definition – to give oneself up into the power of another.

The picture we usually have in our minds when we think of the word surrender is the white flag of one side in a battle, surrendering to the other, with the likelihood of unpleasant consequences like imprisonment, or execution.

However, I believe surrendering is what God is really asking of us. He is asking for us to give ourselves up to his power, but different from surrendering to our enemy, we are giving ourselves up to someone who loves us and wants what is best for us.

Psalm 37:7 God’s Word translation writes, “Surrender yourself to the Lord, and wait patiently for him.”

Dear Lord, You are the ultimate power and love. Surrendering ourselves to you gives us great comfort and strength. Help us keep that in our minds so we will have the strength to do your will and the comfort of knowing that you have us in your care. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

The Alpha and The Omega

I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” -Revelation 1:8

As humans we talk about time being constrained by time. “You only have 24 hours in a day,” we say. We look at things as past, present, or future.

Though it is difficult for us to understand, God is not constrained by the concept of time. He created it. And though he is too awesome for us to even comprehend; he is also aware of each of us, and our individual situation.

Psalm 103:13 says, “The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.” and Luke 12:7 says, “..even the hairs on your head are numbered.”

There is no limit to God’s power, and we all should be in awe and grateful that he cares about each of us, individually.

Dear Lord, How amazed and blessed we are that you will hear our prayers and have unlimited ability to intervene in our lives. Send your care, healing, comfort and favor on your children. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
