Keeping Our Fears In Perspective

Global Warming, Climate Change, Overpopulation, MERS, SARS, Bird Flu, etc we hear in the media about all the calamities we should be afraid of. This is not a new phenomenon.

In the old testament, Isaiah the prophet was told by God that Assyria was soon going to conquer Israel. He said, however, in Isaiah 8:12-14, “Don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do, and don’t live in dread of what frightens them. Make the Lord of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life. He is the one you should fear. He is the one who should make you tremble. He is the one who will keep you safe” NLT

Without a doubt there are risks and dangers in our life, but we need to remember who controls it all. We should put our “fear” in God’s power not the risks and dangers of the day. We need to put our faith and hope in God who has the power to deliver us from our fears here on earth, and any fears of what happens after we leave our earthly life.

Dear Lord, help us remember that you are in control of everything on earth. When we truly put our faith in you we have nothing to fear. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Evil and Good

In Romans 12:9 Paul tells us, “Hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good.” Most of the time, we can look at a situation, and differentiate the good from the evil (bad), though we may have trouble overcoming the temptation toward what we know is wrong.

Some of you may have heard this from a Pastor we know, he has a concise practical way to follow Paul’s direction saying, “Touch holy things, and don’t touch evil things.” The “touch” is meant to include what we see, or hear, as well.

James tells us in James 4:7, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

If we want to make an improvement in our lives and our walk in Faith, a big step is deciding to turn toward the good and turn away from the evil.

Dear Lord, Help us make the decision to turn from evil and resist the devil. Then give us the strength to hold fast to what is good. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

The Lord Provides

There is a misconception, which might even be considered a stereotype, that being a Christian means one is poor and struggling, with nothing to his or her name, living in lack. I believe that this is another ploy by the devil to lead people away from God and Christianity.

Although Christianity is definitely not about gaining material wealth, the Lord provides for the needs of those who put their trust in him.

There are many Christians, who put their faith, hope and trust in, and commit their plans to God, and God has blessed them with much earthly wealth. Church congregations need to remember this as well. We need to trust that God will provide what we need to do his work.

Psalm 31:19 says “How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you.” and Psalm 34:9 “Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.” NIV

Dear Lord, help us remember to count on you for our needs. Help us remember and believe that you want to provide us good things which will also allow us to use them for your work. In Jesus’ name we pray.

Transformed

I heard this today, and it stuck with me. “Many books can inform you, but the Bible can transform you.” It reminded me of the passage in Romans.

In Romans 12:2 Paul says “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

When we read the Bible and let the Holy Spirit work in our hearts and minds, more than just learning, we are transformed into new people, who see things in life differently.

Dear Lord, transform us, so that we may know and do your will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Trust Him

Psalm 147:10-11 says, “His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of the warrior; the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”

I think in modern day terms, this means, God is not impressed with our sports cars, boats, or gadgets, nor how fit, smart or charming we are; He is happy with us when we put our trust in Him to care for us.

Dear Lord, though it appears so simple, but it is so powerful to do what you ask, and put our hope and trust in You. Help us take that step of faith and rely on Your promise of care. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
