There is an important difference between belief and faith, particularly, between belief in God and Christian Faith.

James writes in James 2:19,20, “Are there still some among you who hold that “only believing” is enough? Believing in one God? Well, remember that the demons believe this too—so strongly that they tremble in terror! Fool! When will you ever learn that “believing” is useless without doing what God wants you to? Faith that does not result in good deeds is not real faith.” TLB

Paul defines Faith in Hebrews 11:1, “What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead.”

So as Christians, yes we believe there is a God, but much more than that we have faith, “the confident assurance,” in Jesus Christ who saved us from the consequences of our sins, by coming to earth, being crucified, and returning from the dead. Because of that faith, we have eternal life, and because of that faith, we submit ourselves Christ and strive to do His will.

Dear Lord, help us to put our faith in action every day; submitting ourselves to your rules that we find in our conscience and in your word, and by doing good. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

I have heard it said that there is really only one sin, and that is the sin of Pride. All others sins result from this one. Pride is the desire to satisfy our self-centered focus above all other things.

There is a difference between the pride of feeling good for accomplishing something, or the pride in the success of our friends and loved ones and Pride of superiority. The problem occurs when, like many good things, the pride it is distorted and becomes above everything including God.

Pride was the cause of Satan’s fall. He was originally one of the angels, Lucifer, star of the morning. Isaiah 12:13 says about him, “You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God” Ezekiel 28:17 writes about Satan, “Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty. Your wisdom was corrupted by your love of splendor.”

We rationalize our sins when we put our love of ourselves, our pride, above God. “I want this or that,” gives us the reason, for greed, envy, lust, hate, etc.. Psalm 10:4 writes, “In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.”

I believe the antidote to this sinful pride is gratitude, or thankfulness. It is very difficult to be self-absorbed and be truly thankful at the same time; Particularly, we need to be thankful to God for all he has given us.

Dear Lord, everything good that we have comes from you. Help us remember to give our thanks to you for our success, intelligence, health, strength, family, friends and all good things, and protect us from the devils lure toward sinful pride. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have you ever noticed, when you are shopping for a new car and you have nearly settled on a particular model, you seem to see many of them on the road? Or when you are thinking about moving, you seem to see every real estate sign?

Our minds are always working behind the scenes, seeing more than we consciously notice. It is no surprise, then, that if we spend our time dwelling on our earthly wants and desires, we see those things that our earthly self is attracted to, which are not always good. However, Galatians 5:22 says the fruit of the Spirit are, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If we spend our time focusing on these things, we will recognize and get more of them.

Romans 8:5-6 Paul writes, “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Dear Lord, the mind you gave us is such a powerful machine, but like any powerful machine, if not properly controlled it can go wrong. Help us keep our minds focused on those good things you have provided, so that we build on the gifts of the Spirit and find peace. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Most have heard the story recorded in Mark 5 about Jesus casting the demons out of the man and into the herd of pigs. It is a clear example of Jesus’ power over evil, but there is another part of the story I think is important for us.

Mark 5:18-20 writes, “As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them.”

Jesus told the man to go and tell about what God has done for him. What about us? How often have we prayed for safety for ourselves or loved ones when traveling, or prayed for resolution of a medical problem, relief from a financial challenge, or success in our business, or other requests that have come to pass. Do we go and tell others the great things God has done for us, or do we attribute it to chance?

To start the process, I want to tell all of you how great God is to protect and provide great adventures to me, my wife, and my children last week as we were separated in 5 different places around the country, but all returned safely home with great experiences and memories. Praise the Lord!

Dear Lord, you protect, provide for, and save us every day. Help us remember to tell everyone what you have done for us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Often times when our friends, or family members worry or are anxious, we might tell them “don’t worry, it will all be fine,” or something similar. I read recently that people with a more controlling personality find these type of comments frustrating. In their view, they cannot stop worrying about it unless they know how it is being handled. The solution to reassuring this type of person, according to this report, is to give a reason not to worry. For instance, “don’t worry, I am sure you will get a good grade, because you studied, reviewed, and were prepared,” or “don’t worry about your teenager that is out on his/her own, because he or she is responsible, and is with a good group of friends.” The clear reasons not to worry seem to help.

Paul writes in Philippians 4:6,7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

What he is saying should give all personality types comfort, “don’t worry, ask God and be thankful, knowing that he has it under control. When you do, you will be able to have the peace that trusting God offers.”

Dear Lord, Help us remember that we can give our worries and anxieties to you, and know that you have control over all things. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
