Yesterday was the Super Bowl; The final championship game for the season in American Football. An estimated 100 million people watched the game on television. It was a great game to watch, competitive to the end with many great moments. However the most amazing moments, for me, came during the interviews after the game.

In the center of the field where the game winning trophy was being given, we heard the following:
“I can only give the praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me this opportunity, ” Doug Pederson, Philiadelphia Eagles Head Coach
“Glory to God first and foremost. We wouldn’t be here without him.” Zach Ertz, Philidelphia Eagles, Tight End
“All the Glory to God” Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles Quarter Back and game Most Valuable Player

Paul writes in Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation.”

What amazing witnesses and great examples these men were when given the opportunity to share their faith before the world. If we were interviewed in front of 100 million people would we have the faith and courage to do the same? How about at work, the gym, or coffee shop?

Dear Lord, thank you for giving us these great examples who are not ashamed of their faith in you. Help us follow their leadership. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

When we think of worship, the picture of being in a church singing hymns, praying and praising come to mind, but Paul describes something different in his letter to the Romans.

In Romans 12:1 He tells them, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.”

Paul is telling us that we should devote our bodies, or our whole person, to our Lord. How we live each day is our worship.

Dear Lord, We are grateful for all you have provided us. Help us live lives that are positive examples of your love and bring attention to your saving grace. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

The bible writes about idols in many places; writing about how people turned from God and worshiped idols. Isaiah 2:8 says about Israel, “Their land is full of idols; the people worship things they have made with their own hands.”

I think we often get the picture in our minds of idols being a statue with people standing around it singing praises. However, idols can be anything that we put above God in our hearts and minds. Worship doesn’t necessarily mean bowing down in front of it. The big bank account, the boat, the sports car, the sport, the celebrity who we follow every Facebook post, Twitter comment or interview can all be idols. We need to look at ourselves to make sure we have our priorities in the right order; making sure we put no other gods before God, as the first commandment says.

What are we doing Sunday morning?

Dear Lord, we know we should not have other gods before you. Help us think about what this really means, and make sure we devote our time, thoughts, energy, and resources toward your will first. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

There is a concept in Mathematics called a Proof. A Proof is a step by step demonstration that a formula is actually true. A teacher or professor would ask a student something like, “Prove that the area of a rectangle is its length multiplied by its height,” and the student would explain the steps that show this formula is true.

In Matthew 3:8 John the Baptist tells the Pharasees, “Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.”

If he asked us, could we “prove,” by our behavior, that we have repented, turned from our sinfulness and worked at doing God’s will?

Dear Lord, You know our every thought and action, and know whether we are truly repentant. Give us the strength and will to turn from, and resist, our sinful desires and actions, so that our lives “prove” our repentance. in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Paul tells us in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Great we think, “Faith is confidence in something we want, but don’t see how it can happen.” That doesn’t help us if we don’t know, “How do we get faith?”

In Paul’s letter to the Romans 10:17, He answer’s that question, writing, “So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.”

Do you want faith? Read God’s word and hear it preached.

Dear Lord, You lead us to the answers in the Bible. Help us overcome our resistance to read and hear your word preached, so that we might have the faith in what we hope for. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
