It is not difficult to do enough to get to Heaven……..It is impossible.

This is a bit of a play on words, but it is clear that we don’t “do” anything to be saved. God is the doer, he saves us by his grace through our faith in Jesus Christ, we cannot save ourselves.

I am reemphasizing this truth because I have what may be a slightly different perspective on the story of the rich man that is recorded in Matthew 19, Mark 10, and Luke 18. In the story, a rich man comes to Jesus and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. The man said he had obeyed all the commandments since he was a child. Jesus tells him, “go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Jesus then tells his disciples that it is harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.

What I see in this story is that Jesus told the rich man, and is telling us, to follow him as our first priority, and put everything else below. The reason it is more difficult for a rich person is the common tendency to rely on riches as their “god.” Their riches are what they rely on to solve their problems, make them happy, and give them peace and security. It is also what they often spend their time and energy thinking about. It doesn’t take a lot of riches to fall into this trap.

Dear Lord, it is not only difficult for the rich man, but also for us to rely on you more than ourselves and our money. We often believe intellectually that you are there with unlimited power to save and support us, but we don’t always put this belief into practice. Help us remember to put our trust in you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

There is a popular author whose thesis is that in order to achieve things in life, we need to make ourselves vulnerable. We have to put our ideas out in public and risk being criticized. For most people, this is a frightening idea.

In a similar way, to grow and be everything God wants us to be as Christians, we need to do the same thing; to live our lives openly as Christians without excuse or apology. The difference is that we know God is there supporting us when we make ourselves vulnerable for him.

Psalm 25:3 says, “No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced, but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others.”

Dear Lord, Thank you for the assurance that you, the most powerful force in existence, are there to support us when we honor you. Help us trust in you and live our lives as Christian examples, glorifying you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

All of us have our challenges living the Christian life. Some have difficulty truly believing God’s power to control things affecting our lives, others become proud of themselves and believe they can handle everything without God.

The apostle Paul had some problem in his life which he called his “thorn in the flesh.” The Bible does not tell us what this was, but he describes the affect in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 “So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me” NLT

So whatever this “thorn in the flesh” weakness God allowed to affect Paul, it was there to weaken him and remind him to put his hope and faith in God’s power, not his own. For others of us, our “thorn” may be a lack of confidence, but in the same way, our hope, faith and confidence should be put in God’s power to bring us through our challenges.

Dear Lord, it is a great source of peace and joy to know that You are the power in our lives. Help us remember this when we are weak or troubled, and put our hope and faith in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Though some don’t like to think of it, the Bible clearly states that the devil and his spirits are around trying to destroy us.

1 Peter 5:8-9 says “Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary, the devil, prowls around looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith.”

The devil is trying to separate us from our God; condemning us to damnation. He has many methods to deceive us and distract us to get us to sin. Then when we do sin, he tries to make us feel so much shame that we don’t believe we can be forgiven.

Resist. The devil is no match for us when we have God with us. Pray for protection. Accept the forgiveness and salvation of Jesus. Live in the peace and joy that can only come through faith in Jesus.

Dear Lord protect us from the evil ways of the devil, so that we may live our lives focused on serving your purposes. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

I am not sure why this is, and maybe you have experienced the same, but when I face major challenges or crises in life, or when friends and loved ones experience these major problems, I remember to ask for God help and involvement. However, for some reason when I have routine daily challenges, I tend to look at them as my sole responsibility. Rather than going to God for help and maintaining my peace, I’ll get uptight, and sometimes irritated or critical for silly little reasons.

Psalm 55:22 says, “Give your burden’s to the Lord and he will take care of you.” It doesn’t say, “..but only the big issues you cannot handle on your own.”

God wants to be part of our lives, and wants us to include us in everything we do.

Dear Lord, Thank you for always being there, waiting for us to ask for your help. Remind us to ask in the small routine things as well as the serious. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
