John 19:30 Jesus says from the Cross, “It is finished.”

The mission of taking the burden and accountability for our sin, that he came to earth to accomplish, was finished. Then, as described in Matthew 27:51, “At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart”

The curtain was what separated the sanctuary from the “Holy of Holies” where only the Jewish High Priest was allowed to enter to be closest to God. Now with the curtain torn, there is no special place to be close to God. Now Jesus is the connection that all of us have.

Dear Lord, How wonderful it is that, “It is finished” are not words of death and despair for us, but words of forgiveness and peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Think about this for a minute.

Every experience we have in life may be there on purpose, so that we can become the people God wants us to be, for his plan.

If we believed this, would it change how we view our experiences? Would we look at our problems the same way if we knew they were put there by God for our development?

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Psalm 119:91, “Your regulations remain true to this day, for everything serves your plans.”

Proverbs 16:9, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

And the, well known, verse Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

Dear Lord, Thank you for guiding our steps. Though we may have experiences in life that are unpleasant for us, help us look at them as lessons from you to develop ourselves to be better servants for you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

There is an old saying we have all heard that goes, “we cannot see the forest for the trees,” meaning we are so wrapped up in all the details (the trees) that we cannot see the bigger situation (the forest) which is the important part.

In Jesus’ time, the Jewish leaders were regularly attempting to trick Jesus into breaking the old Jewish laws. They would use all the technical rules in the Old Testament to demonstrate their own superiority, and critique Jesus’ activities. They were to wrapped up in the details of their rules to see the important point of the rules.

Jesus tells them in John 5:39, “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!”

I think we can fall into this trap as well. We can get so tied up in how we need to act, and what rules we need to follow in order to be “good enough” for God, that we miss the big picture. The big picture is God gave us Jesus, and Jesus did all the detail work for us.

Dear Lord, Amidst all our religious activities, help us remember not to miss the important part which is Jesus and what he did for us. In His name we pray. Amen.

We all likely are aware of the tragic fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris yesterday. What a sad scene watching this iconic landmark on fire, particularly during Holy Week.

Who can say why God would allow this to occur? We do know however what Isaiah writes in Isaiah 55:9, “For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts” says the Lord.

God has a plan, and has control of all things. In this life, we may never understand why tragedies like this occur, but we can trust that events are not random.

Dear Lord, help us remember that part of having faith in you, is keeping our, peace and joy even during tragedies, knowing and trusting that you are working a higher plan. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Different parts of the bible use different types of writing to convey God’s message to us. Some are stories about particular events that we can use as metaphors for our lives 2000 years later, like David and Goliath, teaching us about faith in God giving us ability to overcome, or Peter walking on water, teaching us to trust.

In the story of Esau trading his birthright in Genesis 25:29-34, Esau came in from a hard day of hunting and was very hungry. Thinking only about his immediate desires, he asks his younger brother Jacob for some of the stew he was cooking. Jacob replied, “but trade me your rights as the firstborn son.” “Look, I’m dying of starvation!” said Esau. “What good is my birthright to me now?”. So Esau swore an oath, thereby selling all his rights as the firstborn to his brother, Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew. Esau ate the meal, then got up and left. He showed contempt for his rights as the firstborn.”

Esau trades something precious and irreplaceable for immediate gratification. We need to think about this in our lives. Are we trading things of long term value, like our integrity, our reputation, our health, or even our salvation for something we want right now, like entertainment, convenience, or short term pleasures?

Dear Lord, help us remember what is important in our lives, and to think about the long term consequences of our decisions before we make them. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
