Jesus tells the blind men, in Matthew 9:29, “Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”

Paul tells the Galatians in Galatians 3:5, “I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ”

The way I read this, by our faith and belief in God’s power miracles occur and our prayers are answered.

Are we firmly believing God can and will bring miracles in our lives?

Dear Lord, like the father tells Jesus in Mark 9:24 We do believe Lord, help our unbelief. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

I attend a weekly men’s Bible study, and yesterday the text we were discussing was the section of James 3:1-12 about the power of our words for good and evil. We discussed also how significant the words used by parents, particularly fathers, are on their children.

James wrote in James 3:4-6 “And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire.”

We often think when we use sarcasm, “it is harmless, he/she knows I am kidding.” However when we stop and think about what sarcasm is, “The use of irony to mock or convey contempt.” Synonyms including ridicule, and scorn. Would we every chose to mock or ridicule those we love most and who are most influenced by what we say?

On the other hand, the amazing power we have for good in what we say can change those peoples’ lives. Let us use this power to strengthen, encourage, and uplift those we love.

Dear Lord, Help us remember the powerful effect of our words on those we love and who love us. Give us the wisdom to use this power for their benefit. Inspire us with words they will remember for strength, hope, and peace in their lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Our doctors tell us to exercise in order to improve and maintain our physical condition, which is a good practice. In the same way we need to work on our spiritual fitness to build our knowledge and understanding of scripture, faith in God’s support, and strength to resist temptation.

Paul writes to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:8, “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” NLT

What I find interesting about this passage is that it addresses how working on being a better Christian is not just about salvation and life after earthly death, it is also about a better life here on earth, reinforcing the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:33, ” But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” NIV

Dear Lord, help us build our Christian muscles and endurance so that we may experience and the joy of life following you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

In modern times we make a distinction between our brain and our heart as the separated places where we think rationally, our brains, and feel emotionally, our heart. In ancient times, they had a different understanding. The brain may have been where information was received and processed, but the heart was where it was considered, evaluated and put to use.

Proverbs 4:20-23 writes, “My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”

St. Benedict expressed this text in a beautiful way, “Incline the ear of your heart, Receive willingly and carry out effectively your loving father’s advice.”

Dear Lord, it is difficult for us to open ourselves up fully to your advice. Our preconceptions, prejudices, pride, and fear fight against it. Help us open up the ears of our hearts to receive your wisdom and direction. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

I am so blessed to have a beautiful, wise, and grace filled, Christian wife.

I think about my wife when reading Proverbs 31. Verses 25,26 fit her so well. “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.”

My children, our extended families, and I are so grateful for her kindness, care, and encouragement. She is a wonderful example of Christian love to everyone she encounters.

Proverbs 31:30-31 continues, “A woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise”

Dear Lord, I am so blessed to have Liz as my partner in living to your glory. Be with her in her joys and challenges, and give her the power and peace of knowing that you are always there. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
