The history of man, people, as recorded in the Bible is one story after another where God provides people everything they need. People recognize what God has done for them for a short time, then turn away, falling for temptation, pride, and selfishness. God sends prophets to teach people and attempt to bring them back, but that ultimately fails and God is forced to take dramatic steps to remind people of his presence and power. This story is repeated in various forms in the Garden of Eden, the time of Noah, Sodom and Gomorrah, in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, and many other times.

However, God used a different strategy once.

John 1:1-2 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” and in verse 14, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The Word is Jesus who came not just to tell people about God’s presence and power, he is God and became a man. By sacrificing himself for us we may avoid the punishment we deserve for disobeying God.

This plan is so much different and as John writes in, John 1:17, “For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.”

The different plan is that God came to us out of love, as Jesus, to save us, rather than destroy and demonstrate his power and our failings. John 3:17 says, “God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”

Dear Lord, Jesus coming to earth to save us is an amazing act of love for us. Help us remember that this is what we are celebrating on Christmas, Your love for us and Your desire to have us love you in return. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

You may have heard this before, and if you haven’t, it is something worth thinking about. “Faith is the currency of heaven.” Wait, you might say, you can’t buy things with faith. However, Jesus said to the blind men in Matthew 9:29, “According to your faith let it be to you.” Or to the woman who touched Jesus’ robe believing it would heal her in Luke 8:48 Jesus said, “your faith has made you well.” On many other occasions in the bible, Jesus tells people they are healed because of their faith. They obviously didn’t pay for the healing like purchasing a product, but the value of the faith is what Jesus said mattered.

Jesus also criticizes others on occasion saying, “you of little faith” in several passages where those involved needed Jesus to rescue them, like Peter walking on the water. So the size of the faith affects the outcome. Maybe this is partly what Jesus was talking about in Matthew 6:20 in saying, “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

It is an interesting way to look at faith.

Dear Lord, we know that you want us to have faith, hope and trust in you to guide, protect, and also do great things with us. Help us remember that if faith is a currency, our account is only limited by ourselves. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

The book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon, King of Israel after David, who, when asked by God what he wanted, asked for wisdom, rather than riches or power. As a result, God granted him wisdom, riches, and power. In Ecclesiastes he writes about his search to understand what life is about, and the conclusions he reaches.

In chapter 3 he starts by describing how there are different seasons in life, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up….” and so on.

His conclusion in Ecclesiastes 3:11-13, he says, “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.”

We will go through seasons in our lives, good times, difficult times, and we will not know what work God is doing in and through our lives during these periods. What we can know is that God is in control and has a reason, so as Solomon says, we should be happy and accept what life brings along, focusing on and enjoying the gifts God has given us.

Dear Lord, You have given us all so much to be thankful for. Help us reflect on these things, and live the seasons in our lives with happiness and enjoyment. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

I am told that horses can tell where the rider is looking, and good equestrian riders guide their horses just by looking where they want to go. Similarly, with many activities, race driving, flying, skiing, and many others, where one looks is where he or she will end up going, whether that is a good direction or not. A skier focusing on the obstacle is likely to hit it.

In a similar way, In Hebrews 12:1-2 Paul tells us, ” ..let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.”

When we keep our eyes on Jesus, on his example, his will, and on being with him, we will avoid and overcome the obstacles that would lead us astray.

Dear Lord, You are our hope and salvation. Help us keep our eyes on you so that we may run the race you put before us that leads to you. In Jesus name. Amen.

There are devices used in many manufacturing plants, and probably other places that require people to lift and move very heavy objects around throughout the course of their work. The devices are called a “lift assists,” and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. When attached to a heavy object like an engine, the lift assist allows one person to raise the engine up and move it into position for installation into a vehicle on an assembly line, with a relatively small amount of effort.

I think this is a way to illustrate God’s power working through us. Paul writes in Colossians 1:29, “This is my work, and I can do it only because Christ’s mighty energy is at work within me.” TLB

We have to put work in to do what God desires. However, when we put in what we can, God’s power multiplies our capabilities giving us truly supernatural results.

Dear Lord, Your power is beyond our comprehension, but help us remember that you will provide us this power if we begin with what we have. You will be our “lift assist” allowing us to do much more than we could on our own. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
