It is so natural for us to want to rely on ourselves. We see virtue in being “self made”, however, God wants us not to rely on ourselves, but on Him.

Our big bank account, security fences, super health and fitness routines are fine, but we are all familiar with situations where these things have failed those who rely on them.

Being a responsible person is what we do to honor God in our lives, not to replace him. When we need to be confident about our health, finances, security or any area of our life, we should turn first to God, by reading the Bible, praying and putting our faith in Him.

Paul tells in 1 Timothy 6:17, “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment”

God is our source of peace, love, joy, and security, in this life and eternally.

Dear Lord, help us to put our trust in You to provide us what we need. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

One thing that confuses non-believers is, if there is a God, and God is good, why do so many bad things happen in the world? This question assumes that God’s intent is to make everything nice and pleasant for people on earth, and if that isn’t happening, then God must not be in control.

Psalm 119:91 says, “Your regulations remain true to this day, for everything serves your plans.” the NIV version puts it this way, “Your laws endure to this day. For all things serve you.”

God is in complete control of what is happening in our world, and as has been described in many cases in the Bible, God’s plans often include things that are not very pleasant for some people. Some examples include the Great Flood, the Babylonian captivity, the martyring of believers, etc. In our world today we see domestic violence, wars, famine, and natural disasters, that cause terrible pain and suffering for people. We don’t always know why God is letting these things happen, but we need to keep our faith and trust in God’s plan, and remember there is something much bigger and more significant beyond the horizon of our life on earth.

I like the expression, “We don’t know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future.”

Dear Lord, Help us remember that you created all things for your purposes and your plans, not ours. We need to remember our part is to accept your gift of Salvation, bring glory to you, and to love our neighbor. If we keep these things in mind, we can have peace knowing that you have everything under control and as Paul wrote in Romans 14:8 “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Peter writes in 1 Peter 4:8, “Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.”

I was meditating on this text, and the question came to mind. From whose perspective are the sins covered by love, the one who sinned or the one who was sinned against?

I believe that the answer is, both. When we love, we can cover and forgive the sins of those who sinned against us. Also, when we sin, our love can cover our sins, leading us to apologize, repent, and allow the one against whom we sinned, to forgive us.

The ultimate demonstration of this is that the love God showed us through Jesus Christ covers our sins, and the love we have for Him leads us to repent and receive that gift of God’s love.

Dear Lord, your love for us covers our sins and saves us. Help us remember to accept your love and share it with others and cover the multitude of sins with it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Happy Father’s day to all the fathers reading! Yes, this is a day set up to recognize us and our fathers, and we should take the moment to accept and be grateful for the attention that may be given. We should also show our thanks for our fathers.

It is an incredible joy and an incredible responsibility to be a parent, a father. It is another level of influence we have to shape our world. As an individual, we have only our own actions to affect things, but as a parent, our influence can continue for generations, just as our fathers and mothers are influencing the world by how they raised us.

Paul writes in Ephesians 6:1-4, “Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.”

Some may not have had fathers that were good examples, but it is still a lesson that can be learned, by not repeating it.

My brothers and I have been incredibly blessed to have a father and mother who are amazing Christian examples. We can only hope and pray we will be parents like them.

Dear Lord, how blessed are those of us who have and had fathers who brought us up to love and follow you; Fathers who provided us example of your loving instruction and discipline. Help us all as parents learn from these examples, and from Jesus’ example of loving instruction and raise our children to love, trust, and follow you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

The Bible tells us in a number of passages that we should be humble. James 4:10 writes, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

Being humble goes hand in hand with being thankful. If we are thankful to God for the things we have, our skills, our health, our successes, it is much easier to be humble. Job 1:21 writes, “The Lord giveth and the lord taketh away.” Whether we do things just right, or make mistakes, God determines the outcome.

When we feel the desire to take the credit and explain what a great job we did with our success and achievement, we need to think about 1 Corinthians 1:31 where Paul writes, “If you must boast, boast in the Lord.”

Sometime when you are complimented on an achievement, try responding with something like this, “Thank you. God has truly blessed me.”

Dear Lord, all we have comes from your gracious love for us, working to grow and develop us. Help us remember to give you the credit and glory for the successes and achievement we experience in life,, and use them to further your work. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
