What Has Your Attention?

We have a 8 year old Golden Retriever as our pet, and over the years we have worked on training him to listen to our commands and walk properly along side us. One of the books I read on training described that the key to having the dog listen and do what you expect is to keep their attention on you, their master. When their attention is drawn away from you, they will start off on their own agenda, chasing a squirrel, or following a scent.

I am not equating people to pets, but in a similar way, what we put our attention on affects what we do in life. In 1 Chronicles 16 David is telling the people of Israel how to behave, praise, and follow God, and he writes in verse 11, “Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.”

We need to be regularly turning our attention to God, his word, the bible, prayer, and worship, so that our attention is not drawn away toward things that take us away from God’s will.

Dear Lord, your lessons and instruction are available through your word in the Bible for all of to lead the life you desire. We need only keep our attention on you and your teaching, and you will guide us. Help us do just that. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

A Plan For Each Of Us

It is interesting to look at the lives of people and see how the many seemingly unrelated events and circumstances come together to create the lives they have at any point in time.

We can see this in Biblical personalities as well. Would Moses ever have thought that he would become the leader and liberator of the Jewish nation, or Joseph becoming so powerful in Egypt after being sold as a slave by his brothers, or Paul at one point persecuting the early Christians, then later becoming the leading spokesman for Christianity?

We can see some of these things in our lives too today. How we came to know our best friends, how we met our spouse, or how we ended up living and working where we do. We cannot predict what God has in store for us, even tomorrow. 1 Corinthians 2:9 Paul writes, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”

We don’t know why things are going the way they are for us at any one time, but we can know that God loves us and has plans for each of us.

Dear Lord, Thank you for the peace of knowing that you have control of all that happens to each one of us. If we only surrender ourselves to your will, our lives will be the beautiful picture that you are painting. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Wisdom

Often times people use the words knowledge, understanding and wisdom interchangeably, as if they mean the same thing.

Actually there are significant distinctions between these words, particularly with reference to the Bible.

We can look at knowledge as the facts or data, understanding as what the facts mean, and wisdom as what do I do about it.

Applying this to our Bible and faith, we read a verse and know what the words say, that is knowledge. We consider the words and cross reference with other Bible verses and stories to understand what the words are trying to tell us. However, the very important piece is what do we do after we understand what the words mean, that is wisdom.

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

So let us always take time after reading our bible, and ask for God’s wisdom on how to apply it in our lives.

Dear Lord, we know that You are the source of wisdom. Give us this wisdom as you promise so that we will know with confidence how to proceed in our lives. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Our Primary Challenge – Fear

I have heard it said that events do not have meaning until we give them meaning. People can look at the same facts and draw different meanings from them.

Fear is one meaning we can give to the facts that we see or experience. Fear is one of the primary tools, our enemy, the Devil, uses to separate us from God. He uses fear in order to put us in a state of unease and anxiety, rather than the state peace and confidence that we can have with faith in God.

Faith is the antidote for, and weapon against fear.

Mark 4 tells the account of Jesus calming the storm when he and the disciples were on a boat. The disciples feared for their lives, but Jesus said in Mark 4:40, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

And David told us in the well known Psalm 23 verse 4, “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

Dear Lord, give us the faith in you that overcomes fear, worry, and anxiety. Help us truly believe that no matter what we face, you control all outcomes and we can be peaceful and confident in your power under all circumstances. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Re-Animation

I heard an interesting way to look at Christianity. “Christianity is not about making bad people good…its about making dead people alive.”

Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:5, “even though we were dead because of our sins, He [God] gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead.”

So if we are good, it is because we have been brought back to life, re-animated, and we can share God’s love.

Dear Lord, thank you for bringing us to life with your Spirit so we can live eternally with you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
