God Knows What We Need

Jesus tells us how to pray in Matthew 6. One of the lessons, in Matthew 6:7-8, he says, “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Many of us have something we have been praying for over and over for a long time, possibly years. As Jesus says, God knows what we need before we even ask, so rather than just asking over and over, why not pray for the wisdom and understanding to know why God has yet to answer our prayer. Maybe he is trying to teach us something; patience, trust, or maybe He is encouraging us to take a step of faith toward what we are praying.

I believe God hears and answers every one of our prayers in the way that is best for us based on his plan, though often we cannot see how.

Dear Lord, You know what we need and what we desire. Thank you for hearing and answering our prayers. Help us have the wisdom to learn the message you are giving us while we wait for your answers. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Joy

Many people have the wrong idea about happiness and joy. They think that something from outside them has to occur that will provide them reason to be happy; a promotion, a new car, a boyfriend or girlfriend, someone complimenting them, etc. All these things are nice, but happiness really comes from inside us; how we look at our circumstances.

Solomon writes in Proverbs 12:20, “…Joy fills hearts that are planning for good!”

We start the process and plan to do good, and happiness and joy are the result.

Dear Lord, help us remember that our joy comes from within us. Help us plan to do good and share our joy. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

It’s Not Random

It is easy to think that events in our life are mostly random. Simple things like, whether the traffic light stays green or turns red right before you get there, or more significant things like running into an old friend you haven’t seen in many years, narrowly avoiding an accident, and unfortunately, difficult and tragic events as well.

However, I believe that events are not random, there is an order and meaning for the events in our lives. In some cases, God is influencing events for us, in some cases, we are doing things that create positive or negative consequences for ourselves, and other cases we don’t know and will never know the reason. However, I believe there is a reason, and no matter what is occurring, God can and does influence each of our lives.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 10:29-31, “What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.”

When difficult and tragic events occur in our lives and those we love, it is hard to accept that God knows and allows these things, but we can take comfort in what Jesus says, “don’t be afraid” God cares about each of us and those we love.

Dear Lord, we thank you that our lives are not random, You have power over all things, and care about each of us. Give us peace in this knowledge, and help us put our cares and concerns in your hands. In Jesus name. Amen.

Never Disgraced

David wrote in Psalm 25:1,3, “O Lord, I give my life to you. I trust in you, my God!….No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced,”

The dictionary defines “disgraced” as shamed, humiliated, and dishonored. My takeaway from this passage is that when we trust God, we should conduct ourselves with confidence, trusting in this, God’s promise. There is no guarantee that people will treat us with respect, but it does not matter, because we have the favor of God on us.

David also writes in Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?”

Dear Lord, we give you are lives, hopes, and dreams and trust ourselves to you. Help us remember to live therefore in the confidence of your love and favor. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Pray With Thanksgiving

If you are like me, often when you pray you come to God with anxiety and concern about the circumstances about which you are praying. It is human nature to be anxious and fearful when there is risk and potential of tragic consequences.

However, a couple verses in the Bible help us think about prayer a bit differently, with thanksgiving.

Colossians 4:2
Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

Philippians 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

It is definitely a difficult task to pray with thanksgiving, when the reason we are praying is because we are afraid. If we try, however, it accomplishes two things in us. It reminds us that God loves us and has control of all the circumstances we face, and when we have a feeling of thanksgiving, it is very difficult to also feel afraid.

Dear Lord, help us come to you with thanksgiving when we pray, even when we are praying for relief from the fear of events we may be facing. We know we can be thankful in everything because you love us and are always with us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
