How very important it is for us to forgive others.

Jesus says in Matt 6:14-15, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” and in Mark 11:25 Jesus says,” And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive your sins.”

When we pray, we need to take a moment and think about whether we are withholding our forgiveness from someone. If so, we need to release our animosity toward them and put it in God’s hands. This may be very difficult, but it is very important for us, so that we may receive God’s forgiveness, for which we ask.

Dear Lord, we may have been hurt or treated unjustly. There may be evil people in the world that seem unforgivable. Help us, however, follow your example of giving them what may be undeserved forgiveness, just as you gave us undeserved redemption and salvation. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

How do we define life? It can be defined in many ways, our physical life, beating heart and active brain waves; our consciousness and awareness of ourselves and our existence; but more individually, our lives and our relationships, our interests and activities, our strengths and weaknesses, our skills and talents.

Jesus says in Matthew 10:39 “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.”

I think Jesus is referring to the entire variety of life definitions. If we surrender to God, those things that make up our life, he will give us, as He describes in John 10:10, “an abundant life,” not only in our eternal life, but in our life on earth, as well.

Dear Lord, thank you for the promise of eternal life most of all, but also thank you for the promise of an abundant life on earth, abounding in peace, hope, and joy. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

I have heard it said, “coincidences are God’s appointment book.

Have you noticed that when you are keeping your priorities right, keeping your focus on God and his will, things that seem like random circumstances bring us into contact with someone who is just the right connection for something on which we are working; or we run across someone who needs just the experience or expertise that we have.

Acts 8 tells the story of Phillip and the Ethiopian. After Jesus had risen, and ascended, the disciples become inspired by the Holy Spirit to split up and begin telling the good news to people everywhere. Phillip goes to Samaria and while there he is led to help an Ethiopian official understand some prophesies in Isaiah. Philip uses this opportunity to tell the Ethiopian the Good News about Jesus.

Acts 8:29 says, “The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.” and verses 34-38, “The Ethiopian asked Philip, “Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?” So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus. As they rode along, they came to some water, and the Ethiopian said, “Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?” He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.”

It is interesting to note that Ethiopia has a population of about 100 million people today, and the population is over 60% Christian. Could this have been a result of this witness by Philip?

Dear Lord, You are always working through us and others to complete your plan. Help us realize your work in the coincidences that occur in our lives, and look for the reason, and our role in the plan. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

We all have different personalities, which make different things more and less challenging for us. For many of us, accepting criticism or correction is very difficult; whether we think it is necessary to always be right for our ego, or whether we take criticism as a question of our authority or intelligence, it can be challenging for some.

The Bible gives us some insight into this situation in a number of verses including, Proverbs 10:8 which says, “The wise are glad to be instructed, but babbling fools fall flat on their faces,” and Proverbs 20:3, writes, “Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling.” Finally Proverbs 9:8 says, “So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you. Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser.”

We have probably all seen the “know-it-all” who can’t accept any criticism, and shouts down anyone that has a differing view, and also, the successful leader who listens with humble confidence to differing opinions, and responds with grace. Which is more like Jesus?

Dear Lord, Help us learn the wisdom and humble confidence that Jesus demonstrates for us, that we may become wiser and more useful for you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Many of us have had those times of reflection, wondering what God wants us to do with our lives. For some it is an easy decision, they have a passion that drives them toward their occupation, or avocation. For others, it is not always clear.

I am coming to the realization, that for us, who wonder what we are “supposed to” be doing, we begin to figure it out as we go. A process something like, Pray for guidance, step forward, repeat…..

1 Peter 4:10-11 says, “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another….Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ.”

It may not become clear for a long time, but as Peter wrote, we each have gifts to use to bring glory to God. Serving each other “with all the strength and energy that God supplies.” This brings God Glory.

Dear Lord, You have a plan for each of us, though it is not always clear to us. Give us the persistence and faith to move forward serving you by serving each other trusting in your guidance. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
