I believe many of the things we do that we know are wrong are the result of us giving in to temptation. Many of these temptations are put in our minds by the devil. Paul tells us in Romans 6:12, “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

One of these temptations is acting out of rage, anger and revenge. It is so easy for us to wish for revenge, and terrible consequences for those who do wrong to us or to others, but that is the temptation we need to overcome.

Paul tells us also in Romans 12:19 “Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God.”

Our solution to evil, is given in Romans 12:21, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Dear Lord, Thank you that we can leave our anger and desire for revenge to you, knowing you will address all injustice with your omnipotent wisdom and unlimited power. Give us the strength to face evil, not with rage, but with good. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Genesis 3 tells the story of the temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. verses 4-6 write, ““You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.”

When I think about it, I wonder what Adam and Eve were thinking. They had to know that God created everything, they had personal interaction with Him, and he specifically told them, “don’t touch or eat the fruit from that tree.” How could they be persuaded by the serpent, a creature God created, to disobey God? It seems like we would know better.

However, do we?

We believe God is our Lord, the supreme power over all things. We have the Bible, His word, His direction, and it tells us, don’t have things more important than him, don’t lie, don’t take things that are not ours, don’t take God’s name in vain, etc… How can we be persuaded to disobey God’s direction?

None of us, on our own, are capable of overcoming the temptation in order to be “good enough” for God. It is only through believing Jesus saved us that we can be forgiven of our disobedience.

Dear Lord, no matter how we may try, we cannot overcome temptations that make us disobey you. What peace and joy it brings to know that we are forgiven and made right with you through Jesus’ sacrifice. Thanks and praise to you. Amen.

Many professions require routine training in order to keep up with the latest technology and techniques, or just to maintain important skills. Doctors and Nurses, teachers, programmers, pilots, and many others have regular requirements for training and testing.

In a similar way, it is important for us to continue our study of God’s teaching in the bible to reinforce the knowledge, learn more, and give God the opportunity to connect with us through his word. Obviously we will not lose our license to be a Christian if we do not keep studying, but Hebrews 2:1 says, “So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.”

The important message for us is getting in the habit of regularly reading and listening to the “truth,” the good news in the Bible.

Dear Lord, Thank you for giving us the truth in your word, the Bible. Help us read and listen carefully so that we do not drift away. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.

We all have our challenges living the Christian life we desire.

One common challenge is criticizing. Many of us see all the problems with other people. How they drive (too slow in the left lane) what they wear, how they do their work. These critical thoughts interfere with our ability to experience the peace and joy that God desires for us.

In The Living Bible translation, Jesus says in Matthew 7 using, “Do not criticize, and then you won’t be criticized. For others will treat you as you treat them. And why worry about a speck in the eye of a brother when you have a board in your own?”

The solution to this temptation and urge to judge or criticize others, is a mindset of love. When those critical thoughts arise, stop and replace them with conscious thoughts of love and caring for the one you were about to criticize. Remember everyone does not have the same upbringing, skills, training, education, sense of style, or awareness that you may have. A mindset or demeanor of love will change your critical perspective into one of tolerance and better yet helpfulness. You’ll be looking for ways to help those you may once have considered targets of criticism.

Dear Lord help us remember to reflect the love You show to us to those we encounter. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Everyone has something to be thankful for. Taking a moment out to think about these things, and be thankful, actually helps our view of life. It is impossible to be bitter, angry, or negative when we are being thankful.

Not only, however, should we take time to be thankful, we should think about who to be thankful to. Other than the specific things people do for us, the major things in life are provided by God. Things like, the beauty of nature, the magical balance of the forces of nature, the ability to think, feel, learn, and reason, the ability to love, and be loved, so many things that only God can provide.

Psalm 50:14-15 says, “Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High. Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.” and verse 23 says, “.. giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me.”

Dear Lord, Thank you for the amazing blessings you provide to all of us. May we bring our thanks to you to honor you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
