This is one of those “counter-intuitive,” opposite of secular understanding, things about Christianity. The knowledge that when we honestly lay all of our disobedience to God out in front of him with honest remorse, God forgives us the moment we ask.

Psalm 103:12 writes, “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”

The challenge many people have is that they have trouble accepting the forgiveness God is offering, for the simple act of sincerely asking.

Carrying the guilt and shame of un-confessed sin can make people physically ill as they dwell on it and are unable to overcome.

Psalm 32:1-3, says, “What happiness for those whose guilt has been forgiven! What joys when sins are covered over! What relief for those who have confessed their sins and God has cleared their record. There was a time when I wouldn’t admit what a sinner I was. But my dishonesty made me miserable and filled my days with frustration.” TLB The NET version translates the last verse, “When I refused to confess my sin,my whole body wasted away,while I groaned in pain all day long.”

And Paul writes in Romans 3:3, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”

It is so important for each of us to spend time confessing our disobedience to God’s will and just as important, to accept the forgiveness that God promises.

Dear Lord, We are sorry that we constantly fail to live up to your standard. Give us the strength to strive to do what you would have us do, and forgive us when we fail to do so. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

You may have heard this one before, but the message is worth hearing again.

A man is is late for an important meeting and arrives at his destination to find the parking lot completely full. He drives around a parking lot looking for a place to park and cannot find one. He finally decides to ask God for help and prays, “Dear lord please help me find a parking spot, and I will go to church every Sunday.” Just as he says “Amen,” a car pulls out opening a parking space right in front of him. Then he says. “Never mind God, I found one myself.”

How often does something similar happen to us. It may not be us specifically asking for help, but we may be experiencing success in our life, or things are just going well. Do we stop and thank God for these things, or do we credit ourselves for our intelligence, discipline, business savvy, or skill with people.

We need to remember that God has provided all we have and remember to give him the glory. This is also relevant to our country. It was very common in times past for our Government leaders to thank God for the prosperity and success of America, our country which has grown from essentially a 3rd world place 150 years ago, to the undisputed leading power and force in the world. We all need to make sure we remember to give God glory for what he has done with America, “one nation under God”

In the old testament, Moses told the Israelites before they entered the “Promised Land.” In Deuteronomy 8:14, “Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.” then in verses 17-18 “He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.”

Dear Lord, We thank you for the good things you have done in our lives, and we also thank you that you have given us challenges that make us stronger. Mostly we thank you that you have saved us, through Jesus Christ, and we have nothing to fear. You are always there for us. Help us remember to give You the glory for the success and joy in our lives. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

If you have learned to read music to play an instrument, or sing, you are familiar with the many small characters, accents, symbols and notations on sheet music that tell you to play faster, louder, with different techniques, or how to navigate the sections of the piece. It is kind of like a code, and if you don’t know it, you cannot really understand how the music should sound.

I a way, this is like the situation in Matthew 13:10-13, “Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Why do you use parables when you talk to the people?” He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them. That is why I use these parables, For they look, but they don’t really see. They hear, but they don’t really listen or understand.”

The parables are like a code that can only be deciphered by someone who has his or her heart open to receiving God’s message. The more open our heart is to hearing the message, the more understanding we are granted.

Dear Lord, We praise and thank you that you have given us the ability to understand your parables, and have given us the Holy Spirit working in us. Help us use this ability to become more knowledgeable and use this knowledge to help others come to understand as well. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Often times people use the words knowledge, understanding and wisdom interchangeably, as if they mean the same thing.

Actually there are significant distinctions between these words, particularly with reference to the Bible.

We can look at knowledge as the facts or data, understanding as, what the facts mean, and wisdom as, what do I do about it.

Applying this to our Bible and faith, we read a verse and know what the words say, that is knowledge. We consider the words and cross reference with other bible verses and stories to understand what the words are trying to tell us. However, the very important piece is what do we do after we understand what the words mean, that is wisdom.

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

So let us always take time after reading our bible, and ask for God’s wisdom on how to apply it in our lives.

Dear Lord, we know that You are the source of wisdom. Give us this wisdom as you promise so that we will know with confidence how to proceed in our lives. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

One of the mysteries of Christian faith is the Holy Spirit.

Paul writes in Romans 15:13, “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

The Bible tells us that we can only believe in Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit working in us. It also tells us that it is the power of the Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, and allowed the apostles to perform miracles. The Holy Spirit is also how God works in us, connects us to each other, and to Him.

We therefore have God’s unlimited power in us and available to us. I believe that the biggest limit on that power is our limited faith in it.

Dear Lord, let us take the limits off of the Holy Spirit working through us, and as Paul tells us, “overflow with confident hope in the power of the Holy Spirit.” With You, all things are possible. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
