Jesus tells us how to pray in Matthew 6. One of the lessons, in Matthew 6:7-8, he says, “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Many of us have something we have been praying for over and over for a long time, possibly years. As Jesus says, God knows what we need before we even ask, so rather than just asking over and over, why not pray for the wisdom and understanding to know why God has yet to answer our prayer. Maybe he is trying to teach us something; patience, trust, or maybe He is encouraging us to take a step of faith toward what we are praying.

I believe God hears and answers every one of our prayers in the way that is best for us based on his plan, though often we cannot see how.

Dear Lord, You know what we need and what we desire. Thank you for hearing and answering our prayers. Help us have the wisdom to learn the message you are giving us while we wait for your answers. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Have you read stories about successful people, athletes, musicians, actors, chefs, Nobel prize winners, business people, etc. and the story writes about how they studied under the same instructor that coached several other great athletes, or the person studied under the same professor as several other famous people.

These successful people are bringing fame and “glory” to their teacher, coach, or mentor as a result of their own success.

In a similar way, Jesus’ tells us in Matthew 5 that we, Christians, are the light of the world. In verse 16 he says, “let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

We need to be those people who bring glory to our teacher, Jesus, with our actions.

Dear Lord, thank you for setting the example for us on how to live a humble life serving others with love. Help us live this life and be a light for all to see and bring glory to you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

In Bible days people didn’t have paper and pencil to write notes, or journals to jot down important facts and information. Important information was shared with others and these stories would be handed down from parents to children across generations. One other way that they remembered important events was to build altars and landmarks at the sites the events happened.

Joshua 4 tells the story of the Jews finally crossing the Jordan river after wandering in the desert for 40 years. God parts the river and the people walk across on dry land. In verses 2,3 God tells them, “Tell the twelve men chosen for a special task, one from each tribe, each to take a stone from where the priests are standing in the middle of the Jordan, and to carry them out and pile them up as a monument at the place where you camp tonight.” and verse 6,7 say, “We will use them to build a monument so that in the future, when your children ask, ‘What is this monument for?’ you can tell them, ‘It is to remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of God went across!’ The monument will be a permanent reminder to the people of Israel of this amazing miracle.”

Having the monument allowed the people to remember the powerful miracle God did and remind them to believe he is able to do miracles for them, again. In the same way, we should have a way to remember times and events when God did exceptional things for us; saving us or a loved one from a terrible accident, the unexpected “snow day” when we were not quite prepared for a test, a terrible medical diagnosis that turns out to be a just something simple.

I keep a simple list of times things occurred that cannot be explained by natural causes, but these occurrences prevented disasters, or created tremendous opportunities. I occasionally review the list to remind myself that God is there looking out for me. You might find it helpful as well.

Dear Lord, help us remember those times that your hand was clearly guiding or protecting our lives, and reflect on those times when we need reinforcement of our faith in you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

You may have heard this story in other contexts, but it is good illustration of the Bible text today.

A teacher stands in front of a class with a clear plastic pitcher. Into the pitcher he pours golfball size rocks until they fill to the top of the pitcher. The teacher then asks the class, “Is the pitcher full?” Most of the students agree that it is full. The teacher then reaches behind his desk and finds a container of fine sand, which he proceeds to pour into the pitcher. The sand fills in the gaps between all the rocks and eventually all the gaps are filled and the sand reaches the top of the pitcher. The teacher then asks the class again if the pitcher is filled. Suspicious of another trick, most of the students are cautious but agree that now the pitcher is full. Then the teacher pulls out a container of water and proceeds to pour a cup of it into the pitcher, filling it to the top. “Now,” he says, “the pitcher is full.”

In John 15:10-11 Jesus says, “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

Some people may feel that they are fulfilled, but without Jesus, there will be something missing. Like the pitcher, it may look full, but it is not until the water fills it up that we can be truly fulfilled.

As Jesus says when his joy is in us, our joy is complete.

Dear Lord, we are incomplete as people without you in our hearts and lives. Help us obey you and remain in your love so that our Joy may be complete. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers reading this message. I wish you God’s Blessings of Peace and Joy!

My three brothers and I are incredibly blessed to have a caring, faith filled, wise Christian mother who raised us with love and understanding. She is also loved very much by our wives as their mother too. She lives her life as a wonderful example of faith and service for our whole family.

Happy Mother’s Day also to my wife Liz! You are a tremendous Christian woman that is an inspiration to our family! Like your mother, you are a gracious, kind, and strong woman of faith, for all of us to admire and model.

Paul writes in Ephesians 6:3 about the honored position mothers have, and the promise God has for those who honor them, writing, “If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”

Today, let us all remind ourselves to follow Solomon’s words from Proverbs 23:25. “So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.”

Dear Lord, help us realize and appreciate the beautiful way you built life for us, with a loving mother to bring us into this world. Help us all honor our mother’s with the lives we live, so that we can bring them happiness and joy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
